Lurgan Park Press Release 2nd June 2014

Champion Day Promised at Lurgan Park.

The popular Lurgan Park Rally, once again backed by Orchard Motorsport and taking place on Saturday 28th June, is attracting some very high calibre drivers indeed.

First entry in was from 11 times winner Kenny McKinstry, often dubbed ‘King of the Park’. Judging by the quality of the top drivers who have now committed to enter, that include current Tarmac Champion and last year’s Lurgan Park winner Garry Jennings, as well as this year’s Circuit of Ireland National winner Declan Boyle, both in Subaru Impreza WRC’s. Former 5 times Tarmac Champion Eugene Donnelly has entered, car unspecified. While a very welcome visitor from Clonakilty, Co. Cork, Kevin Kelleher, who finished in 3rd place last year in his Subaru, is also making the trip. Derek McGarrity, another former multiple Tarmac Champion, has declared his intention to compete in a new Mini WRC. The Escort Challenge is always a big feature in Lurgan Park, and one of the top exponents, Wesley Patterson, has entered. The event is to receive full television coverage by RPM on UTV.

The format of the rally is very similar to last year, with 8 stages throughout the day, starting just after 10.00 am and finishing at 4.30pm, with the start, Finish and all the action within the confines of the Park.

One of the major factors to the success of Lurgan Park over the years is that the organising North Armagh Club has restricted the entry to around 50 selected competing cars so as to provide non stop high quality action. The quality factor would seem to be building in abundance for this year. Another major key to the success of the event is the natural beauty and amphitheatre quality of the Park itself, which not only provides great viewing, but also a tremendous paddock area that has an Ascot like ambience, albeit it with different type of hats and horsepower. The place to meet and socialise with the drivers and old friends! Craigavon Borough Council supports the rally in many ways, but especially with the use of this beautiful park.

For further information on the event, the Secretary of the meeting is Keith Somerville, and he can be contacted at 07745 959141

The event is considered a jewel in the scheme of NI motorsport.

It is the one event I wouldn’t miss for the world.” McKinstry will drive one of the iconic Subaru Impreza WRC S14 cars from his rally preparation business. He is always the benchmark for the other 50 invited drivers.

JENNINGS CUTS LOOSE IN LURGAN

LPR 13 Winner Garry Jennings

ORCHARD MOTORSPORT LURGAN PARK RALLY 2013

PRESS RELEASE: For immediate release 12th August 2013

JENNINGS CUTS LOOSE IN LURGAN

Fermanagh’s Garry Jennings took a convincing win on last Saturday’s Orchard Motorsport Lurgan Park Rally. Co-driven by Michael Moran in his Subaru, Jennings finished 12s up on Banbridge man Kenny McKinstry and his co-driver Claire Gamble. Kevin Kelleher took the final podium place and made it a Subaru top three. West Cork man Kelleher had Martin Brady on the notes for the day. Craigavon Borough Council once again supported the rally and the thousands of spectators who attended were able to enjoy the beautiful park in some decent weather.

The special stages are short and sharp. The pattern over the years has been that the rally is won and lost by just the odd second or two. Over the first three stages last weekend Jennings and McKinstry were indeed swapping tenths of seconds. Stages 4 & 5 however included a gravel section. Current Irish Forestry Champion Garry Jennings really cut loose on these two. He was fastest over both by three seconds.

The final three stages were almost a formality for Jennings and he won by 12 seconds, a lifetime in Lurgan Park terms. Garry has won GpN many times in Lurgan, generally finishing in the overall top six. This was his first time in Lurgan in a WRC car, and his first outright win in the Park. McKinstry has taken victory in Lurgan 11 times over the years. He will have to wait at least another 12 months to make that a dozen on this unique North Armagh Motor Club event.

Eugene Donnelly and Derek McGarrity did not make the start, Donnelly because of a close family bereavement and McGarrity because his Focus WRC wasn’t ready. This may have made Jenning’s job simpler, but this was still a very emphatic win for the Kesh based oil distribution man.

Kevin Kelleher’s third place was also very impressive. It was his first time competing in the Park. He worked his way up from 6th initially to take the final podium place. Ballinamallard’s Jonny Leonard, who had his mum Geraldine co-driving in his GpA Lancer, made a conservative start, then scythed through to take 4th. Kenny McKinstry’s daughter Emma also had a fine drive to 5th and got ahead of Derek McGeehan in his Mini WRC on the final stage.

Lisburn’s Wesley Patterson also impressed by taking ‘Best Escort’ accolade and 7th o/a, just 3s ahead of Frank Kelly in a similar Mk2.The latter had been in front, but a high speed spin over the grass left him playing ‘catch-up’ on Patterson.

Lurgan a GO for Garry

Photo William Neill NeillPics_3

PRESS RELEASE:

For immediate release 5th August 2013

Lurgan a GO for Garry

This weekend`s Orchard Motorsport Lurgan Park Rally has a stunning entry, with 10 World Rally Cars heading an invited list of 50 crews. Topping that list is 11 times winner Kenny McKinstry in his Subaru WRC, with 5 times Tarmac Champion Eugene Donnelly at 2, current Tarmac Championship leader Garry Jennings at 3 also in a Subaru, and former multiple Tarmac Champion Derek McGarrity, at 4.

Following his sensational win on the Killarney Rally of the Lakes this year, and then dominating the recent Donegal International timesheets, Garry Jennings could just be the man to take the coveted Lurgan Park Trophy this time. Garry has won the GpN category in Lurgan Park many times over the years, and in doing so has beaten all the odds by finishing in the top six as well.

Speaking from his Fermanagh base earlier this week, Garry commented: – “Lurgan Park is a rally I always enjoy. It is very competitive and as well as that a great day out for families and kids. I would love to win it, but at the same time I`ll have to take care of the car, because the rally is so close to the Ulster. Immediately after the event the engine and gearbox has to come out of the car for a rebuild. The unit has to be on a ferry to England on the Sunday night. Having said take care, when the timekeeper says 3-2-1 Go, that could all change!”  Fittingly, Garry is co-driven by one of his sponsors, Michael Moran from the `GO` petrol station chain!

One thing is for sure; whoever wins the rally will almost certainly earn their plaudits. No.1 seed Kenny McKinstry, also a former Tarmac Champion, as well as just about every other sort of former motorsport champion, first won the rally 30 years ago. He is the master at getting every stage just right, which is so important in Lurgan Pk. Kenny would dearly love to round his winning tally up to a dozen.

Business is business of course, and Kenny has hired his best Subaru, the Impreza WRC S14 to Eugene Donnelly. Eugene didn`t earn the nickname `the Genie` lightly, and he will surely be ultra-competitive in Lurgan as well.

Derek McGarrity, like Jennings and Donnelly, has loads of Lurgan Park experience, but has never won it. Derek`s race begins in the middle of this week, when his Focus WRC`s rebuilt engine returns from England. It will then be a two day job re-installing it in the Focus WRC – a race against the clock for the Saturday morning 10.15 start in the Park.

In addition the entry list is studded with top drivers in beautiful cars, including some fabulous Mk2 Escorts to be driven by some highly regarded drivers such as Frank Kelly, Wesley Patterson and Fintan McGrady. Four of the furthest travelled drivers for the rally include Ray Brammer who makes the trip all the way from Kings Lynn. Former Irish GpN Champion Kevin Kelleher is bringing his Impreza WRC from Clonakilty in Co. Cork. Former Irish Forestry Champion Pat O`Connell is a wedding guest on the Friday of the rally, but is planning an early escape to drive his Lancer in Lurgan Park, and Tom Morris and Hugh Murdoch are travelling from Scotland to drive their respective Escorts.

There are a couple of very notable father and son combinations driving as well. Former NI Rally Champion Denis Biggerstaff is out in his Impreza WRC, while his son Stuart, the youngest ever NI Rally Champion, drives an iconic Metro 6R4. Similarly young Marc Johnston from Ballinamallard will compete in a GpN Lancer, while his father Raymond is in a Historic Escort RS 1800. Also in the Historic section is another former NI Champion, `Swervy` Mervyn Hill in a Lotus Sunbeam. Indeed, as well as hugely technically advanced World Rally Cars, the Mk2 and Mk1 Escorts, the select Historic contenders plus some fabulous GpB rally machinery from the `Slowly Sideways` club will provide a large part of the day`s entertainment.

The rally is organised by Armagh Motor Club and also backed by Craigavon Borough Council. Lurgan Park itself is in beautiful condition at the moment, and the whole idea is to give families, as well as the out and out motoring enthusiasts, a really enjoyable day out. The event will again have the centralised paddock service area concept, making the teams and cars totally accessible, which all adds to the unique ambience and atmosphere which Lurgan Park has generated since the late Bertie Fisher took victory on the first one back in 1980.

At a reception held this week in Craigavon Civic Centre, the Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Mark Baxter, who was hosting the reception, commented, “The Lurgan Park rally is always an important date in the Craigavon calendar. We are delighted to support it and wish the North Armagh Motor Club, as well as all the competitors a successful day. We are very proud of Lurgan Park and it is always great to see so many people enjoying the facility.” The rally enjoys support from many quarters, especially from overall sponsor Brian Stinson of Orchard Motorsport who commented from his Armagh City base. “It is an honour to be involved again with Lurgan Park. The rally is very special to the area and we are glad to support it.”

Barry Taggart is the rally Clerk of the Course, while William Fullerton, who has been involved with the event since its beginning, is the Rally Director. William commented at the reception. “As ever we have put a huge effort into bringing the rally to fruition. The emphasis is more and more on safety. Just one extra item this year is the provision of 1,000 metres of motorway safety barrier which has added another £10,000 to the expenses. We have a massive team working on the rally. It is a big logistical task to get everything set up. Hopefully we will get a bit of decent weather and it should be a good day.”

DONNELLY`S LURGAN BID

Final_LogoPress Release 29th July 2013.

DONNELLY`S LURGAN BID

The buzz is building for the iconic Lurgan Park Rally on Saturday 10th August. The rally, supported by Orchard Motorsport and Craigavon Borough Council is once again attracting an exciting entry, with the latest addition being 5 times Tarmac Champion Eugene Donnelly.

Many times over the years Donnelly has come close to winning Lurgan Park, but the ultimate prize has so far eluded the Magherafelt man. Donnelly will drive the McKinstry Motorsport Impreza WRC S14. He did have an outing in the car a while ago at Enniskillen Motor Club’s St Angelo Rally, and won that, so maybe this will be the year that Eugene will fulfil his Lurgan Park ambition.

He commented from his current base at Lakeland Tyres in Enniskillen, “I found the Impreza S14 a fabulous car to drive. It has very good traction. It won the Donegal International this year with Sam Moffett driving, so it is obviously a good car. Lurgan Park is always a great day out, a bit of fun. I’ve driven every sort of car there – the Mk2 and the Mk3 Escorts, the Celica, a Subaru, the Corolla WRC. I came close to winning in the Corolla, but Kevin Lynch outgunned me in his Subaru, which had that wee bit more grunt. You need loads of power in Lurgan Park.”

Eugene will be co-driven in the Park by Adrian Fraser, who sat with him in St Angelo. The car will be backed by Lakeland Tyres & Yokohama, as well as Protune Remapping.

As ever the rally is attracting lots of interest. Another driver who really wants to win is also a former multiple Tarmac Champion, Derek McGarrity. However it is going to be touch and go if McGarrity can make the line-up, as his Focus WRC blew its engine on the Donegal Rally and it will be close to the deadline before it is returned to his Glengormley base ready for fitting to his Focus.

Orchard Motorsport Lurgan Park Rally Press Release – 24.06.13

ORCHARD MOTORSPORT LURGAN PARK RALLY

The ever-popular Lurgan Park Rally, which has been running in its present guise since 1980, will take place this year on Saturday 10th August. Orchard Motorsport will again be backing the event. As well as attracting top class World Rally Cars this high profile event will incorporate the Mk2 Escort Challenge. This should provide even more spectacular rally action. A wide variety of family orientated activities and lots of catering will also be provided within the confines of the beautiful Lurgan Park to make it a great day out for all. Full television coverage by RPM should also add to the atmosphere.

Regulations for the rally are now available. Two previous winners, Kenny McKinstry and Darren Gass, both in Subaru WRCs, have pledged to take their place in the fifty invited rally crews. There will once again be a centralised service paddock. Eight special stages, two each ran three times and one ran twice, will provide the meat of the action. The final loop of two stages in the iconic natural amphitheatre of the park is to a new design. This should add extra interest for the drivers as well as the anticipated 10,000 spectators.

The rally is organised by North Armagh Motor Club. As well as sponsorship from Orchard Motorsport, Craigavon Borough Council also fully supports the rally. The Event Director is the vastly experienced William Fullerton. The Clerk of the Course is Barry Taggart and event secretary is Keith Somerville.
